I'm going to Busan area for a 4 day field trip. Reach me on my handphone if you need to find me! No updates for a while.... will have mega update when I get back.

Saturday, November 26, 2005

Well... not much to update for Friday... We learnt more Danso, and managed to learn Arirang already! Yay! And we're going to watch a band concert (Bernard and me only) on Saturday (today)... Just a quick update before going for lunch and concert.

Er... OH! Arko gave us cool cool jackets!!! Giordano~ haha but its really nice and warm.. and very expensive too! Thanks Arko!

Yea fewer and fewer things to update.... hmmm Oh and we tried some bbq meat (pork?) at the roadside stores too... he asked whether we want hot sauce.. NEVER take the hot sauce.. REALLY HOT! but still the weather was cold so the spiciness was bearable...

Bought slippers! but a bit small but its ok.. just to walk around the hostel only...

Next Monday to Thursday going on field trip to Busan and its surroundings, gonig to a temple, traditional village and more! Updates when I get back!

Tomorrow MIGHT go to King's Singers concert... if Jinju manage to wake up from her hangover and buy the tickets for us (joking Jinju :P) And tonight we might be going for a presentation of a living Korean composer's music. Rephrase: And tonight we might be going for a living Korea composer's presentation of his music. English is getting bad.

Last nite didn't update... so I shall do it now.. Thursday.. we went to the Center for Traditional Korean Music and... we got to learn an instrument! Its a Danso, and its somewhat related to the Chinese Xiao1. Not easy to play siah.... but we're trying~ The instructor is this Mr. Lee and he was surprised we actually managed to get sounds on the very first try. He said he had some students who couldn't get a sound for like 3 months?? Thats the worst case scenario I think... Anyway later somehow we told him we were all musicians already, and he gave a relieved look and rattled off in Korean haha. He must be happy that he doesn't have to teach basic music stuff.. I can totally relate to that!

After that we went to climb the small hill backing our institute! (photos will be uploaded tonight!) Really nice place.. and if we walk that path everyday... I'm sure we'll be fitter when we get back! Bernard's just beside me now and I asked him and he said ok haha

Anyway after that we had some coffee (I had green tea latte, quite nice!) Oh and the brewer actually created a leaf motif on my cup using frothed milk! so cool! I'm going to order it again and take a picture of it!

At night we attended a concert of traditional Korean music, and the others from theatre and dance came along too~ It was quite nice... but some parts are just a little repetitive for me, but their musicianship is really good. They start together, end together and don't rush, all without a conductor.. and most importantly the speed is somewhat like crotchet = 45 or slower..

After that we had dinner at KFC... and sponsored by Arko again! hahaha, and then we went back... Jinju took the wrong train at the transfer station and she was halfway BACK to where we came from before she realised it.. then she got off and got a taxi.... Poor girl, she's overworked and stressed up over all of us. Thanks Jinju we really appreciate what you're doing!

I like our Danso lessons! AAAAAAAARRRRIIIIIIRRRRRRAAAANNNNGGGGGG

Ok today..... ate KFC for lunch and went to the Traditional Music Center for lessons... We had a total of..... 1 hour!!! From 2 to 3 and thats it??? Well basically an overview of Korean traditional music, and tomorrow we are going to learn 1 hour of Pansori...

So after the lesson me and Bernard walked around cos we saw many music shops around... then i tried to find Leslie's ligature.. There's this big shop called Cosmos Music that has the thing he wants.. and a nice tenor recorder... Horner.. not sure if its good or not haha. Of course i didn't get it... its way to ex....

Then we had dinner den had Korean lessons...

And ya today's quite a typical day.

Ok.. this morning we went to the Korean Traditional Music Institute... and were late haha. Cos its Jinju's first time there, and we didn't estimate the time correctly. Anyway its not very near.. total is like 12 stops away with one change of train. Total took us about an hour, including a bus ride up as well. We were about 20 min late but the guy in charge was ok I suppose. Anyway we all sat down, and then he gave the three of us some kind of booklet to read... while he spoke to Jinju in Korean.. and spoke and spoke haha. Then he talked to us in English (phew) and asked us what we wanted to do... He was being very nice about it and said he'd try his best to get together a nice program for us, because we were all quite diverse in our field... So we gave some suggestions and I think he's going to try to follow them all! yay!

Then we went to tour the place... and saw the people practicing, saw the halls, saw the other buildings, and they have this really nice outdoor stage just at the foot of a small hill. Cool eh.. then we were done! haha that was so fast.. it was only 11+ and Jinju had to go back to her office.. Chain went with her but me and Bernard went to the library to find cds. The LINC or OPEC was like in Korean and it took us like maybe 15 min to figure how to use.. or at least me... Bernard gave up after a while. We tried to get the cds, but they were all restricted so I had to give my passport and then they checked out the cds for us to listen there only. So we listened and listened haha till it was about 12+. We then went to explore the opera house and concert hall (its just beside the library) and found this really cool CD shop that sells many many many CDs that I'm sure NAFA people will be dying to come see... I took a giant stack of all those CDs that I wanted and slowly winnowed through them to 3. But it still cost me 44k Won.... then we went off and walked down to find the station. On the way we passed this place which said 'English menu available' and we stopped and went in for late lunch haha. I had curry rice.. quite nice and Bernard had Bibimbap. Then we went off to the station and Bernard took a wrong turn.. and we ended up walking more than we had to. In the train Bernard went off at another stop to go off to God knows where but I went back to listen to all the CDs i bought.

Jinju came over to look for some people during the evening but they weren't there... the other people doing the other program... so we persuaded her to join us for dinner haha at Twins again! I had curry tonkatsu (curry day haha) which was really nice... Then its the end of the day.. and we're up here again haha. Oh now we have our favourite coffee... Coffee Esmeralda haha. The owner recognize us now! and he gave us 500 Won discount each the last time we went! Wooo nice uncle! Then today he gave us each a small doughnut to go with the coffee.. Those cubes you know... haha

Good day.... I love the Institute that we're going. So beautiful and scenic.. I'll take more pictures to show you guys!
Quick update! Today we go to the institute for Traditional Korean Music... hope its going to be good! Will post more when I get information on that place!

Yesterday no update cos well... there wasn't much to update haha... look out for today!

Sunday, November 20, 2005

Sunday... We were supposed to go watch Harry Potter and get the others their phones.... Jinju called me around 12 to say she just woke up... typical for her Saturdays and Sundays.. And she checked the timings.. and Harry Potter is not out yet. So I told the others the news and we were suddenly left with nothing to do. Actually in the morning after breakfast I went out with my manuscript paper and pencil and walked around the hostel, looking for some inspiration haha cos I'm writing a piece for female chorus based on an autumn haiku.... what better place than here in Korea now? Not that far from Japan either. Anyway it helped a little, but I had to go in to the dorm quick (I stayed outside for about half an hour only) cos my hands were almost frozen. Then Bernard came over to use my Sibelius and I composed with my manuscript.

We went lunch at this place just opposite our coffee place... quite nice.. I had ramen.. Nothing like hot soup on a cold day... Then we went to watch movie! haha. We watched Corpse Bride.. which is long gone from Singapore.. and for awhile it felt like we were back in Singapore haha cos its in English thank goodness... Then we went to Myongdong to look around... whao its big! and like many bugis streets put together... There are also very posh posh buildings with nothing but Chanel, Louis Vuitton etc in them.... So high class~~

Anyway we walked around there for about 2 hrs? then came back to buy some groceries and went to eat at the place near our hostel... the place where we went for Bibimbap the first time... This time we both ordered something which is beef though we didn't know haha I had some beef soup thing and Bernard had some form of Bulgogi.. Somehow my food always come to me boiling in a stone bowl.. has been like that for every meal, except for breakfasts and the pizza hut at Sinyongsan (duh). So now I'm online again updating and trying to compose my piece... which I just realised I've left it downstairs in my room.. Darn.

Below is only for Grace!

Heh darling today call me the phone make our voices so strange ah.. I thought who call me wor.. Then you also eh who is this person in my room haha~ Muacks... Darling don't call so often ah ok? So expensive.. We talk on MSN with mic and headphones same also baobaoz... Love you lots and miss you...

I got my new phone today!!! Those who want to call me (incoming calls free) please do so at +(822)01072632213. Its quite cheap... total cost is 70k Won... which is like er... S$100+. For 3 months I'd say thats pretty good. Mom please give this number to Gugu and Ahyi, so if they decide to come over they can call me.

Today morning I tried to compose..and eventually did haha.. but not a lot... but still its a start. Today we were supposed to meet Jinju at Sinyongsan for her to bring us to buy phones, at 1pm... However, just as we were going to leave, Jinju called us and said she'd need more time so me and Melecio went for lunch at the same place we had dinner yesterday haha only this time we both had the tonkatsu... Then we discussed some politics and stuff... its nice talking to Melecio about it cos he's knowledgable and has his own opinions about things... Gave me a lot to think as well.

Right... then off to Jinju's place... We found her in her convenience store just below her apartment... and found that she had a parcel she was waiting to be delivered since 12pm... and it was like 2.45 and they haven't brought it there yet. So we went up to her place and watched a part of a DVD - The Legend of 1900. Well.. its really nice and I wanna finish watching it... We only watched like half an hour. In the end she got tired of waiting and told the delivery people to leave it at the reception desk downstairs.. Right then Melecio was going to meet a friend at 4, but he forgot that person's contact! So he went back to the hostel to get it... so only Bernard, Ernest and me were left. Bernard joined us after he went to his SOKA gakka.

Getting the phone was quite easy, and done in like 20 min haha so we went around looking for a webcam for Jinju and a USB light for Ernest. After that we went to look for some DVDs, intending to watch them at Jinju's house after dinner, which was at Pizza Hut, but we talked for so long there, including some sensitive topics regarding selections (that's all I'm saying) that we had to go back after that since everyone was tired. That was about 8pm.

On the way back from Hyehwa station, we passed this second hand store, and the owner spoke good English! There was this nice trenchcoat that I wanted to get, but didn't cos I don't think I need it yet. Then we stopped at a cafe for some coffee take out.. It was good! Then just outside our hostel we saw Chain.. and he bought the exact trenchcoat that I wanted! haha. Luckily I didn't get.. cos I think its too small for me...

All in all a good day... except that it was cold!~~

Friday, November 18, 2005

Right today is Friday... and we went the the Arko library... cool place the library... oh and because we had lunch with the chairman of Arko, we went to the library early... so we had to meet at 8.5o.. Jinju was almost late haha and I think she ran from the station to the Arts Council builing which is..... maybe 5 min away? Whatever it is she was panting like mad when she got here. And she apparently forgot something as well cos before we left the building, she ran back to get something. 2 runs in the early morning... Good for her haha.

Ok the library.. its really nice and has like lots and lots of CDs and scores and books just waiting for us to borrow. All of us didn't want to leave the CD section haha! Jinju was trying to make all of us hurry up or else we might be late for the lunch with the chairman.. They let us borrow 2 CDs each! under Jinju and Jiwon's name haha I didn't borrow any though.... I'd get a membership card which lasts a lifetime (good for when I go back for honeymoon, etc...) Oh and the Korean Traditional Music place is just behind the library so we can go there every day if we choose to haha.

So anyway... we weren't late for lunch.. and lunch was like 11 appetizers before the main course which contained like 9 dishes... You do the math. Very nice lunch... but we had tests! haha the chairman asked about Singapore and what its like there, the culture etc... even asked about the GNP... God how would I know? Luckily we managed to scrap some answers up (thanks to my history teacher in sec sch)... the others also got tested haha!

Then after that we went back to our rooms and all of us slept! haha and then we went for Korean lesson and then dinner... Only Tham, Chain, me, Bernard and Ernest went though... we went to this nice place called Twins i think haha. The food is nice and the servings big.. and only costs $4000 won per person... I had some udon thingy in a stone bowl which kept the soup really hot. Chain had some tom yam noodles and the others had pork cutlet with rice and salad.. Then we went back and bought some coffee.. I didn't buy though cos i bought this really cute set of earmuffs and scarf. Will put the picture up soon haha....

Thats about it for today... Tomorrow going out to shop! Maybe we'll get mobile phones so its easier for us to keep in touch since we'll be in different places from Monday onwards...

Ok today started with a visit to the Arko Training Center... Pics are uploaded too.. not many though.. The training center was about an hour away by car... which is quite ok.... except my legs too long and felt a bit cramped haha. The recording studio there is quite good.. state of the art equipment and fits 20 musicians... The theatre is even better. Though its only for training the students there, the equipment is better than a lot of professional theatres... The backdrop is like one single piece of canvas only, which means it doesn't have sewn lines which can be seen during performances... The stage is very versatile, one can exit stage center if one chooses haha. and the orchestral pit opens up and the boxes which originally fill the pit can be used as seats... There are 6 bars on which to hang the lights, which is more than many theatres...

ok lunch... Lunch today was Korean food and there was like a lot! haha the dishes kept coming and coming.. and we ate like almost all the seafood there is to eat today... fish, prawn, squid, crab, sea cucumber, oyster (which i didn't eat). Anyway yea the lunch was really nice. There was this rice thingy... with fish roe and seaweed in a stone bowl... very nice... I'd like to have that again!

after lunch we went back for the arts policy talk..... and Bernard was falling asleep at the table.. so malu.... (embarassing for non-Singaporeans) then after that we went to this DVD rental place where you pay and watch DVDs on the spot. I finally watched Ghost in a Shell.... haha.. its about $10 per person which I suppose is ok... but can't do it all the time. Oh only Bernard and me.. the others well I don't know what they did. After that we went for dinner (KFC).. We had this meal with 2 burgers, 3 chicken strips and 2 drumsticks and some salad thing... all right... and they had mustard honey sauce haha. I like! Oh the burger one of them was bulgogi flavoured??

Oh yea before that we went exploring somemore actually... to another part of the vicinity.. which is actually more happening than our side here. We found a cinema too! At least.. it looks like one. We'll go watch Harry Potter with everyone one of these days! There is also a bigger supermarket there haha so we went in but didn't get anything.

Oh yea... for X'mas we were thinking of having it either at Jinju's or Jiwon's place.. (get ready you two) Just writing it down so I don't forget haha. Documented proof.

Ok then we went back after dinner... then transfer photos... then upload photos and update blog now.

All right day I suppose...
Ok... Wednesday... Wednesday was.... quite boring.... the lessons were on fund management of Arts Council Korea, but at least I managed to stay awake and follow somewhat. Lunch was nice though... it always is when its Arts Council lunch haha. Today we had Japanese lunch! Some of us had eel and some had mushroom... Luckily I had the eel... I hate shitake mushrooms... The eel was very nice, and so was the rice. But there was kimchi! haha. Koreanised Japanese food~ And the rice is also Koreanised... See the pictures for details.... though that might be quite impossible until I caption each of them.. which I'm very resistant to doing actually... There's just so many of them!

After lunch we were free, and we went for coffee again haha. We know why Jinju wants Coffee Bean all the time now... She has the card and she managed to get like 6 chops in a go! haha! Soon she will have a free cup of coffee. Sneaky i say... hahaha (yes Jinju reads this...) You know I'm joking right?

After coffee Ernest and Melecio (finally got his name right.. sorry Melecio) wanted to go Sinyongsan (新龙山) to get computer cables.... and I went along cos I wanted to see the place. Its like a giant Sim Lim... (those not in Singapore.. Sim Lim is somewhat like Sinyongsan) about 20 times bigger... There are many many buildings about 5 stories high and each one is like a Sim Lim... We found the cables in quite short order, but we stayed to look at all the DVDs for sale. Melecio turned out to like operas a lot and we found this stall which sells a lot of them. He walked away with 9 of them... and I bought 3. we managed to cut the price down from 5000 each to 44000 for 13 (12+1 free) haha. Actually it was Melecio who did the talking...

After that we went back to Hyehwa, but Melecio went to Itaewon first by himself... Me and Ernest went to Macdonalds to get dinner and to bring back for Bernard who was feeling lazy and stayed in the hostel. Macdonalds had zero English on their menu, which I find very surprising. We ordered 3 meals and went back to eat... Then it was Korean lesson no. 2... learnt how to order in the restaurant and how to buy things... very simple sentances only though... Then learnt one more part of the alphabet... and then that was it for the day.

Ok... My address here is:
National Institute for International Education
Room 108
818, Dongsung-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul, Korea 110-510

If any of you want it that is.....
Ok Tuesday… Today we had financial talk in the morning… and found out how the Arts Council Korea finance department works… Details again in my detailed report. After lunch, which was like a Korean 10+ course or maybe even 20 course meal… all small dishes of course. Pictures in my Imagestation Arts Council sponsored lunch/meal folder. It was quite cool… there was this rice that came in a stone bowl, which you scooped out into another bowl and poured water into the stone bowl to cool it. The water actually boiled before it cooled the bowl down… and all the rice that was sticking to the sides of the bowl scrapped off easily and that was supposed to be eaten too. The rice had golden needle mushrooms (lucky not shitake), chestnuts and ginko nuts. Oh ya and red dates.

After lunch we went to Insadon, which is like the place for alternative art forms in Seoul. We took the public bus, together with Jinju and Jiwon and went there to find InsaSpace, which is Arts Council Korea’s er… property there. Jinju missed the building the first time round and we made a slight detour, but during that detour we saw a music shop selling Korean traditional instruments! Haha! So Chain and me and Bernard decided to go back there after the visit to InsaSpace, after which we were free to do whatever we want. The InsaSpace (on the 3rd and 4th floor of some other building, no wonder Jinju missed it. Not blaming you if you’re reading this Jinju :P) I must admit the art that we saw there didn’t appeal much to me… It so happened that the gallery there was now featuring works of an artist who deals with weeds… interesting but I’m not really one for such arts… so I shan’t comment too much on that.

Oh yea… before we went Insadon we actually went to the Arts Council arts center which is just round the corner from the Arts Council Korea building. There the gallery had paintings and installations by an in-house artist. Now these are nice. He’s much into nature and respects it a lot so his pictures naturally are mostly about nature, and a lot of them have him in it, bowing to nature. There was also a photo gallery, which was, I think, inspired by Andy Warhol. This photographer took pictures of very normal things at every bus stop from New York to where I forgot… He is also interested in time and space, and has some pictures which are time based – 2 photos from the same location but at slightly different times.

Arugh… forgot again… before we went to the arts center, some of us went to Coffee Bean and Rudy said that it was his birthday today. So we planned something for him… and decided to meet 6.30pm at the dorm to go out celebrate.

Ok back to Insadon. So after we finished looking at InsaSpace, we broke up into small groups and walked around. Bernard me, Chain and Tham together, the two Cambodian girls with Rudy I think… Ernest came along too, but Malecio was tired and he went back first. Jinju and Jiwon had to go back to their office so they went off as well. Well… basically we walked down Insadon, and went to the music shop and the instruments are expensive! $500 for some of them… so we decided to learn the instruments first before going back there again, and maybe we’ll know which are good and which aren’t by then. So we walked around and Bernard got lost… as in we lost him. Together with Chain haha. So Rudy, me and Tham went back first and who should we see but Jinju and Jiwon! Haha! They were in a convenience store buying some stuff. They came out and we said we were going back so they also came back with us. We asked why they were still there, and they said they actually went to the busstop already, but don’t feel like going back so soon, so they came back for a while more haha! Oh it’s a good thing they did, cos they helped me and Tham get our EZ-link card (Korea version). The bus was crowded… but all right la… cos its only a few stops. We went back to our hostel and the girls went back to their office.

Rudy’s birthday!
We went to this Western restaurant which I forgot the name and I also conveniently forgot to take pictures of it… but I’ll do it next time round. We walk past it quite often. We had 3 dishes (pictures again at Imagestation), and beer and wine! Haha and it only cost us around $20 each… Quite cheap but the wine wasn’t mature enough though so it wasn’t very nice. Jinju and Malecio went out to get a cake and hid it near me cos I was at the side of the table. Then I lit the candles (strange long and narrow ones) and brought it out after dinner. Nice celebration I think… to be able to celebrate your birthday with people from so many countries. Some of them even got him presents! Nice bunch of people :)

Then… Jinju suggested Karaoke! All right! Haha and Rudy said he’d sponsor the Karaoke! ALL RIGHT! I’ve got much to live up to I think… during my birthday. Hope no one says to go skiing! :P
Karaoke was cool… the room was very big! And had 3 tambourines inside too hahaha. There were English songs luckily and Rudy has a really nice voice! So does Malecio, and Jinju has a very cute voice! We were all dancing and tapping the tambourines and everything. Really cool Karaoke session…

After that we went back and stopped at a convenience store. Chain bought a clothes rack for drying his clothes and suddenly he became everyone’s favourite friend haha! ‘Chain we good friends right? We share the rack right?’ Hahaha~ Ok then I washed up when I got back and went online on the 5th floor. Ernest came along too and I gave him the IP as well… And this morning (Wednesday) Malecio got the IP from Ernest. So now all 3 of us have the POWER! Anyone who wants the POWER can come to us to get it…

Ok this post not that long as the last one… and I think will get progressively shorter when everything ceases to be new~ but for now… read slowly!

Tuesday, November 15, 2005

Very long post. Take your time.

Right… about the first Monday here! The morning started as usual, with Bernard and me going for breakfast… and would you believe it I totally forgot what we had. I remember I had coffee milk though… Wait! I think I remember… it was some beef burger cut into halves haha but I took both halves so yeah beef burger… by the way I’m now typing the blog in my com and transferring it online cos……………… I FOUND A LAN POINT! More on that later.

So after breakfast we had nothing to do as usual, cos we were meeting the Arts Council Korea people ~9.45am. Don’t know what the others did but I read my story book (Portrait of a Lady by Henry James) and fiddled with the com a while, looking at the pictures and organising them somewhat. Right…. So 9.45 we all were waiting in the lobby… but Jinju and Jiwon came slightly after 10. And you know why? Because we ALL left the rooms, and she was trying in vain to call us to tell us to come out of the rooms from her office! Too enthusiastic la we all haha. BTW their office is just 5 min walk away. So cool huh… So anyway they came, and brought us to the conference room at Arts Council Korea for the briefing… and there were mics at every seat haha. Naturally we all tried playing with them (Thank you for blah blah). And so the briefing began… the director of the International Team, which is the one in charge of all exchanges and everything international (duh) talked to us about the history of Arts Council Korea, and their structure and management and finances etc. More of that in my detailed report which I should be starting on soon… Don’t think anyone here wants to know how much Arts Council Korea spends and gets and where their money comes from right? And I don’t want to get arrested either.

So briefing for 2 hours… then lunch! We went this place eat Bulgogi again… but its ok I like it. Onion beef for those in the dark… oh and it’s cooked over this charcoal fire on a well… some form of pan. And of course lots and lots of side dishes, the most I’ve seen so far. There was again that yucky leaf which we confirmed WAS edible, but I’m so not going to try it again. Once is enough. But there was crab as a side dish! And it’s refillable! However it’s covered, no, smothered in chilli paste so I ate 2 only. And get this: the crab was raw! Hey it’s really nice and not mushy at all. The meat is soft and slips off the shell easily and has all the flavours of cooked crab.

Uh… I talk about food all the time cos its new all right… I’ll stop talking about it once I’ve sampled everything there is to sample.

Oh the weather is definitely turning colder. The morning temperature was the temperature of the night before. If this goes on it’ll snow really soon! I hope! Anyway so after lunch we went to open our bank accounts! Yay! The bank is like another 10 min walk away only… and all of us piled inside this small bank haha. So they called us up one by one (the director and Jiwon) and they basically did this: *point* write your name here. *point* sign here. *point* sign here also. *point* and here. Hahaha not that I’m complaining… I can’t read Korean yet… And while we were waiting we just talked, and now they know my bday is 17 dec! haha so I’m agonna have a celebration~ Malecio (I hope I got the spelling correct) has his bday in feb and so does Jinju haha but hers is after we leave… so she is going to change her bday to an earlier date so she can celebrate with us haha. She just wants 9 more presents I’m sure… and I told her just that. Jokingly of course. Still its nice to be able to celebrate your bday with people from so many countries. She’s shifting it to the 4th, same as Malecio. He’s so going to give her a kiss that day haha.

And then, after we all become millionaires (the money deposited was 1,248,400 Won) after deducting the accommodation and some little others which amounted 451,600 Won, we tried the ATM haha. Cos it’s all in Korean we have to memorise which button to press. Basically, push the card in, (have to push, it doesn’t suck it in very well) touch the touch screen top left button, touch a button in the center, touch how much you want, touch want receipt or not and voila, I had 30,000 more.

Sidetrack: clothes dry really fast here. This morning (Tuesday) I washed some small articles that I have before breakfast, around 8 in the morning, and left them to dry, and it’s dry now! Socks of course… what were you thinking? And uh now meaning 9.11am. So it takes 1 hr to dry socks here. On the heater. Cool wot?

Right now back to Monday… we all knew how to draw money its time for more briefings. This time it was much shorter. Introduction to the programme and stuff. Turns out we’re the pilot batch and the evaluations and reviews we give at the end will determine the fate of this programme! I hope this goes on… it’s such a wonderful programme. Right… so that was taken care of quite fast, and we were free from 3.30 onwards, and we went to this art space where we saw the demonstration (yes it’s that one reported in the news in Singapore) and lounged there awhile cos it was so beautiful… yellow leaves falling everywhere, pigeons flying around and stuff. After that we went to this place called Paris Croissant (Bernard, me, Tham, Chain and Ernest) for some tea haha. Cos Jinju recommended that place so now that we’re feeling rich we decided to go there. The bread was really nice… and the drinks good too… definitely worth the money, which is about same as Starbucks anyway. I’d choose Paris Croissant any day. I had this honey walnut triangle shaped block of bread, and hot chocolate. Really good hot chocolate but abit too sweet. Tham had this cake which was called ‘smooth’ or something. We all tried a little of it… tastes like pure egg white… but very pretty cake. Photo will be uploaded soon.

Ok after that we went the multimedia room and YES got USB! So I uploaded some photos… Yea I know I mentioned it in the previous post but this is in the right chronological order so there! The room was damn noisy… some guy had some yucky music on so loud, and others were also blasting their speakers. I heard a Korean or Japanese version of S.H.E’s Superstar. Wonder who copied who. Then some guys played counter strike. And the computers are still in Korean. I chose Imagestation cos it’s the site that is displayed with English commands haha. I might switch if I find better ones… seems Imagestation is hard to navigate somehow.

After that we went back to the hostel and waited for Jinju to bring us to our lesson place at around 6.30. But at 6 I heard her knocking at Tham or Chain’s door and calling out so I hurried out to my door and see haha. Turns out she will be late so she’s telling us first. Tham came running out after Jinju told me, all equipped and ready to go hahaha den I told him 6.45 then he laughed haha.
We had our lesson on the 5th floor cos there’s heating and none in the originally designated place in the main building. Good thing cos it was really cold… even by my standards. We learnt a lot today…. Cos we have 5 lessons of 2 hours to learn what others learn in 2 months everyday. Isn’t that cool… And then! During the break, I went toilet… and I saw someone using his laptop WITH A LAN CABLE ATTACHED! Whao!!! But we had to finish the lesson first and I was like so thoroughly distracted haha but luckily still can concentrate… after the lesson I went out the guy was still there. This is what happened:
Me: Is there a password to access using this cable?
He: What?
Me: Internet *point* password? Need?
He: Sorry no speak English
Me: Uh… what you speak?
He: Chinese…
Me: ORH! 中文! 这个需要密码吗? 还是插进cable 就行了?
Then he told me that no need haha and we talked a little and I said I was sorry I didn’t know he was a PRC haha.

The others around were so stunned that I can just switch to Chinese so fast heehee. Then Ernest asked me what we were talking about so I told him we can use the LAN upstairs yay!

Then we went out eat some things… I tried the roadside stall thingy… had this deep fried sausage in a thick dough coating… then a stick of some intestine I think haha not very sure what is cos it looks a bit weird on a long stick. Then walk walk around…. Really cold… got smoke when breathing out hot air liao! Haha. Then we went supermarket and Bernard bought lots of drinks again… oh then there’s a heater in the supermarket that looks like a fan! Haha. Then back to hostel I went upstairs… after trying for umpteenth time, I couldn’t get the connection to work. So I started to pack. The PRC was still there.
He: 可以了吗?
Me: 不可以…
He: 我给你这个 IP 你试试看.
Then I copied the numbers in and yay! Online! Hahaha
The 5th floor is so going to be my favourite place now.

Right then sleeping time… I came back the room and watched my two online animation which I downloaded just now. Luckily I did watch… cos like 3 doors away got this party going on so loud! Idiots la people want to sleep lo… by the time I finish watching… 1am here, they finally stopped.

More tomorrow!

Forgot to write..... At Hyehwa near this park.... we saw many many many policemen... with shields and all.... And we saw people sitting in a group, like waiting for a rally.. This should clear the confusion in the previous post about the 'Rally again I think... so many rallies...' part.
Right... the computer hanged on me again and the post got deleted again. *deep breath* Let me begin again... Today breakfast was bacon sandwich with lettuce and tomatoes, BROCCOLI SOUP! cornflakes... The soup was all right actually.... but its just a little weird no? Ok after breakfast we wanted to go the multimedia room to try the computers see got USB or not... oh but before that Bernard came my room upload his photos into his portable harddisk. After numerous tries, finally done... den we went to the multimedia place, but we went wrong building and got scolded by the security guard. In Korean. Then we went to the correct building and it was closed. We went back our rooms check and... it only opens mon to fri 9am to 10pm. Right.. so we decided to go shopping, and that was around 9.30. Bernard said he wanted to chant a little first, so I went back my room read my book... and fell asleep. Next thing I know, my phone rang, and Bernard say lets go. I check the time... 12.05. Best. He meant lets go for lunch haha. Apparently he also fell asleep haha.

Then we went out, to the Mrt station (metro).. Hyehwa station, and bought tix and took train. Oh the train before announcements play Eine Kleine Nachtmusik.. the minuet first phrase. EVERY SINGLE TIME. Lucky its only for line 4 of i think 8 lines in total of the train routes. Singapore only NW, NS, NEL they got 8 haha...

We went this place called Dongdaemun... Chinese is dong1 da4 men2 (East big door). Sounds very much like Cantonese ya? Then at this big shopping complex in Dongdaemun, we saw like 30 men in suits! standing in 2 or 3 rows in front of the front door! This time we also saw some people sitting on the floor in a group.. with red headbands! Rally again I think... so many rallies....

Dongdaemun had lots of things to buy.. a lot of funky stuff which Reid (nafa) and N4 will like.... Oh and one thing we notice that Korea is different from Singapore. THE FOOD COURTS ARE DESERTED! even though its like near 2pm...

Next we went Itaemun... forgot the Chinese name... (Bernard just told me its li2 tai4 yuan2) Anyway... there we walk until this place where its like almost deserted, all antique shops... and a lot of them closed. Oh before that we walked this long stretch of road... v nice... trees all wth yellow leaves... really like autumn. Then after that around 3+ we saw BK and went to eat. They had this Steakhouse burger or something... the meal is like $10 la.. but quite nice and filling la... but maybe its cos we had lunch at 12??? Bernard was the noe who wanted to eat... contrary to popular belief... (yes Alan i mean you).

Then we came back to Hyehwa... and went supermarket.. bought toilet paper 24 rolls... haha and other stuff... like water... and hangers... So Bernard walked back with a giant pack of toilet paper haha. Which is quite funny if you remember that the vicinity of our place is a happening place with pubs, cafes, eating places etc....

Right... so then when we got back I came to blog.. and this post got lost cos the com hanged. Then i read emails by Grace! haha so brightened up my day :)

So we went dinner... at this place just outside our hostel. They didn't speak English again... den we ordered the only thing we know... Bibimbap. Actually quite nice... but got this side dish dunno what leaf.... i din manage to swallow it... tastes uneatable to me... Bernard didn't think so though. So the bibimnap... came with 4 side dishes.. kimchi! (what a surprise!), seaweed kimchi, bean sprouts kimchi (oh their bean sprouts at least 3 times as long as ours in Singapore) and ikan bilis... then got a small bowl of soup, and small bowl of er... rice dessert? its like rice in ginger soup... or rather, rice water in ginger soup sweetened.. quite nice actually... then the whole thing only 10000 won... for both of us.. thats like 8 dollars each only... cheap by Korea standards. Oh yea.. it was raining when we first stepped out... so we went back in and wore our waterproof jackets and went out again. haha the security guard must think we're nuts...

Ok... that's all for today... Remember to tag me!

Right.... the last post got lost before I had a chance to post it. So here's the summary. Dinner with Arts Council Koera people. I overslept. Everyone waited for me about 15 min. Bernard almost knocked my door down. Dinner at Chinese restaurant. Not the least bit like Chinese. Lots of kimchi. Smoking at the table. After dinner coffee at underground coffee place. Nice place. Go back hostel. Call the most important people on the phone. Read story book. Sleep.

Next morning wake up. Breakfast. Toast, eggs, milk, yogurt, cake. Nice and filling. Went to visit Korea's cultural sites. Take pics. Walk. Take pics. Take pics. Lunch. Take pics. Walk. Take pics. Back to hostel. 2.5hr ride. Drive holland. Dinner by ourselves. Expensive fastfood. Chicken and fruit platter. Supermarket. Buy stuff. Hostel.

Wait for tomorrow's post.
Right.. this one's for Grace.

Today we went around visiting the various cultural sites ah... den got so many nice places to see and i keep hoping darling is here to see with me... *Baoz* Next time we go Korea ok den i bring darilng around haha
After breakfast update!

When I last left off, we had just reached the hostel. The place looked really....... old and haunted, like those in the movies... complete with old security guard. Our rooms were well.... furnished, and is meant as a double room, but we each got one. Woot! But no internet connection!!!! and the plug was like somewhere hidden by the bed so I had to find it and pull it out. There were some on the study table, but for some reason didn't work. Before we went to the room, we saw Kim finally, and her well some sort of assistant Jung, ok these are their surnames. Jinju and Jiwon actually. Then we had lunch after we unpacked. At least I did. Bernard haven't. I managed to unpack everything and make my room messy in 20 min. To give it that 'lived-in' look you know...

Ok lunch! lunch was.... good~ We had rice (duh), a bowl of beef soup with some noodles in it, and the other dishes for free for all! Too bad we don't get to eat lunch and dinner here. But ok la... the hostel fee is lesser. The dishes consists of some fried fish, a vege which I don't recognize but its very nice, and kimchi... which I thought was pineapple, cos it was in such big chunks. All i can say is i'm glad I took 5 only. The rest of the food was nice though..

After lunch we had a little break so I came online. At 2 we had a hostel briefing, which includes some rules.... like lights out at 2359, no guests in the rooms. We also had confirmation that there was no internet in the room bah.... After that we toured the place with the well sort of director of this program, and went to the main building where we would take Korean lessons. There's a multimedia room there, which we never went in, but I'm going to check it out asap. Hope there's at least a USB link... otherwise my photos how? Oh there is also a small gym (like I will use it), a library which has dvds (and yes got Da Chang Jin) and we also went to see the Director of the building, and he spoke some Chinese. So next time we talk to him we can speak Chinese cos he doesn't speak English. The only people who do are like the project director, Jinju, Jiwon and our Korean language teacher.

Then it was about 3.30, and we were free to go do whatever we want. Me and Bernard wanted to go explore our surroundings, and we asked the others along, but only Tham came. So we walked. And saw sculptures everywhere. Cos this place is like the Waterloo St of Korea, and we saw a lot of performing places, small theatres etc, and even some underground! We also ascertained that the vicinity was full of places to eat! Haha! And coffee houses and other what nots... Don't see shops for other things though... We already have some targets to go eat already haha. There's this one which is 7 stories high, and has restaurant, cafe, 2 pubs in it! We're so going to go to that one.

Ok then we went back to the hostel and slept to get ready for dinner sponsored by the Arts Council Korea. More on that in the next post. Time for the city tour now!
Quick update before breakfast!

Right... last post up till plane landing. After landing we were walking to the immigrations, passed a toilet. Bernard wanted to brush his teeth and wash face so we went in... And he was still half asleep cos he wash his face with his facial wash, den cleaned the tube with paper towels, and threw the TUBE away and kept the PAPER in his toiletries bag. hahahaha

So anyway.... we went out and there were these 2 people holding papers with our names, so we went up to them. They directed us to this row of seats where there was another person there and told us to wait for 30 min cos got more ppl coming. So we waited... and then since we saw the commercial on the plane for rent a phone, we went searching, one by one. Bernard went to the right side of the airport and cannot find. i went left and found the place, but it costs like $2+ a day to rent one, excluding calling rates. Ex siah.... so in the end we didn't get...

Finally the others came, 4 of them... So now we had Rudy, Chenda, Chain, Tham and i forgot the other cambodian girl name. Later ask her. We went to this minivan, poor cambodian girls had to sit facing the rest of us. The guy leading us say 1.5 hrs. Best... tried to sleep, nodded off here and there. One of the poor girls vomitted slightly and she turned around in her seat to face the right side.. I think she vommitted into her towel.. Ewww.. Oh ya the van was so hot la.. i think he on the aircon (which is supposed to give warm air) so low i can't even feel the wind coming from it. And all the windows closed! He did on it la cos i didn't feel suffocated, but almost started to sweat siah.... imagine sweating in autumn Korea...

After like numerous red lights in the city, and jam here and there, we finally reached the hostel.

Description of the hostel and its facilities in the next post!

Ok... start from the beginning, at the airport. First bad encounter with Koreans! I was like first in line to check in my baggage, but the counter not open yet. So i was waiting, then someone came and opened the barrier to let us in, this idiotic Korean went straight past me and give her passport! Then her entire 10 generations followed her in! What crap siah... Budden the guy at the counter quite sharp la he saw this then he beckoned me to an empty row to check in. HA! I had like 2 bags to check i, each 17 kg.. that makes 34, 14 kg overweight. the guy pretend didn't see and let me check it in haha. But he whispered to me to reduce the weight when i come back. How to siah.......

Right... then we went to BK eat, then Grace came... then the NAFA people came..... and disturbed everyone with their chatter haha. Then delay here and there, by the time we checked in its almost time to board. the plane ride was ok.......... i didn't sleep a lot... watched this movie called Island starring Ewan Mcgregor. Then tried to sleep. The plane had very few people so i shifted here and there to sleep but couldn't... Oh... the landing was very good. Hardly felt anything at all. Good pilot!

And now.... its almost lights off. 12 midnight can you imagine... Then no internet in my room. cannot connect the laptop to this outside internet connection.... no USB capability... dunno how to upload my things siah.. Hope i can manage somehow. Ciaos!
